The members of Pickering Bowling Club are supporting Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of Steve Taylor, who was steward of the town’s Recreation Club for almost 20 years and a member of the bowling club since his retirement, and Julie Moss, the wife and mother of two of the club’s members.
Steve, passed away in February, aged 68 and Julie died in March, aged 62.
Secretary of Pickering Bowling Club, Jean Smith said the bowlers would be taking on the Bowl-a-Thon on Sunday, July 13 as part of Pickering Recreation Club’s Family Fun Day.
She said: “Pickering Bowling Club wanted to do something to raise awareness and much needed funds for this amazing charity whilst honouring the memory of two much loved people. What better way for us to do that than to play bowls from 10am to 6pm. “There will also be an opportunity for people to “have a go” at lawn bowls for a £5 donation to the charity, so we encourage people to come along and support this event.”
Sue Collins, Director of Fundraising at Pancreatic Cancer UK said Pancreatic cancer was the deadliest common cancer, with vague symptoms, such as back pain, indigestion and unexpected weight-loss which are also common to many less serious health conditions.
She said: “Due to this, the disease often goes undetected until after it has spread to other parts of the body. More than half of people with pancreatic cancer die within three months of diagnosis.
“Pancreatic Cancer UK is taking on this devastating disease by investing in ground-breaking research and supporting patients and their loved ones through its free-phone Support Line staffed by specialist nurses.”
Sue added: “We are delighted Pickering Bowling Club is supporting us and we would like to wish Pickering Bowling Club the very best of luck.
“Tragically, 80% of pancreatic cancer patients are currently diagnosed too late to receive the only potentially life-saving treatment for the disease, surgery.
“Decades of underinvestment has meant that odds of survival have barely improved since the 1970s. The funds raised by Pickering Bowling Club will help us offer support to patients and families, invest in vital research to help us see the breakthroughs we urgently need, and be a voice for everyone affected by the disease.”
If you would like to support Pickering Bowling Club, you can do so at Pickering Recreation Club on Sunday. July 13. For more information or to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK, please visit www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/fundraise
