Sean Roughan has made his feelings clear
Huddersfield Town defender Sean Roughan described his side’s 1-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic on Saturday as “not good enough”.
The Terriers suffered a narrow loss at the Brick Community Stadium at the weekend, with Jensen Weir’s 61st minute strike proving decisive.
A third consecutive 1-0 away defeat leaves Town sixth in the League One table, on 52 points from 35 matches played. Meanwhile, Wigan moved out of the relegation zone and up to 19th with their victory, with the Latics having now registered 37 points after 33 games.
Reflecting on his side’s defeat, Roughan told HTTV: “Not good enough. We showed glimpses, but in this league it’s not good enough to show glimpses, we’ve got to show it for the full 90 minutes, and we didn’t do that today.
“We’ve got to look back on it and see what we can improve on, because there’s not many games left to play. If we’re going to take a couple of weeks to fix this, then it’s not going to help us.
“We have a great group in there. Everyone’s hurting today, we come in on Monday, we look at it back, we dissect it, and we hit the ground running again, because there’s no point of dwelling on it now.
“Come Monday, it’s a fresh start again, and we’ve got to go in on Monday and hit the ground running, because all of us want to get out of this league, and that’s the main aim.”
Discussing his side’s drop off in performance in the second half, Roughan added: “We probably played a bit too slow, probably slowed it down, and just didn’t show enough character probably going forward, and was too passive I’d say trying to get the ball back off them, and obviously they punished us with that goal on the edge of the box.
“We felt like the first ten, 15 minutes we couldn’t get pressure on it, they kept rolling out a midfielder, and then we decided to go four (at the back) and push Bali (Mumba) up, and then we started to get a bit of joy, we started pressing them, we started moving the ball well, and then second half we showed glimpses, but that’s not good enough. We’ve got to show more, and show more personality.
“Everyone’s got to look in the mirror and got to just grab it by the scruff of the neck and show what they are, because everyone in that changing room is capable. Everyone’s upset, everyone hates losing, I hate losing, it’s not a good feeling, so we’ve got to look back on it and take it from there, take the positives, and take what we can and what we need to do moving forward.”
Town now sit one point inside the play-offs with 11 games of their season remaining. However, the Terriers could drop out of the top six tomorrow evening if Wycombe Wanderers claim victory at Barnsley.
Liam Manning’s side are tasked with bouncing back from defeat this weekend when they host Rotherham United in a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, and Roughan added: “We’ve got to work together.
“I don’t know any team that if you’re working as individuals that you get anywhere good, in life and in football.
“This is where it really matters. This is where we all come together, when we lose, and we come together to make sure that this loss doesn’t turn into a second loss. We’ve showed what we can do, but we just need to do it on a regular basis and show consistency.”
