In March 2023, Law Roach walked away from styling in an Instagram post that sent the fashion industry into a quiet panic, but now ASOS has brought him back with a new role as its first-ever Stylist-in-Residence. “If this business were just about clothes, I would do it for the rest of my life,” he wrote at the time, “but unfortunately it’s not. The politics, the lies, and false narratives finally got me. You win. I’m out.” Three years later, his return comes not through another celebrity dressing appointment, but through one of the industry’s biggest fashion retailers.
The announcement marks a notable turn for a stylist whose career had largely been defined by celebrity dressing and red-carpet spectacle. Roach had dressed Zendaya for every major red carpet since 2011, transformed Celine Dion’s public image in Paris, and received the CFDA’s inaugural Stylist Award in 2022, the first time the organization had created a category for the role. His 2023 retirement, even if only partial, felt like a rare rupture in an industry where his influence had become difficult to ignore.
His new position puts that influence in front of a much broader audience. Roach will shape seasonal campaigns, direct trend content, and bring his creative perspective to a customer base that ASOS describes as fashion-loving and value-driven. The appointment forms part of a broader strategic repositioning called The Stylist, built around research showing that 68 percent of consumers find it easier to know what to buy than how to wear it. In that sense, Roach’s role goes beyond lending his name to the retailer; he is being brought in to help ASOS close the gap between buying clothes and knowing how to style them.
Law Roach’s New Creative Brief at ASOS
The scope of the Stylist-in-Residence role is broader than a standard creative partnership. Roach will work across campaigns, editorial content, and cultural storytelling. His influence is intended to shape how outfits are assembled and presented across the platform rather than simply appearing in a campaign image twice a year. The immediate deliverable is the relaunch of ASOS Magazine, which returns as a quarterly digital publication on Substack with limited print editions. Roach has styled six covers for the inaugural issue, each linked to a shoppable edit on the ASOS website that breaks down the cover look into a complete outfit at Asos price points. The edits focus on maximalist looks, statement tailoring, elevated layering, and modern takes on heritage pieces.
The partnership also brings in Pat McGrath as guest beauty curator and Elias Medini, known online as Lyas and founder of Fashion Week watch parties, as contributing editor. ASOS is assembling a creative infrastructure around Roach rather than positioning him as a solo hire, which suggests the company is serious about the editorial direction rather than treating it as a short-term credibility play.
ASOS Wants to Sell the Styling, Not Just the Clothes
ASOS has spent the last two years navigating a difficult trading environment. The brand built its reputation on fast trend response and broad sizing, but the rise of Shein and Temu has put pressure on the price-and-speed model that defined Asos’s early dominance. The Stylist strategy is a response to that pressure: instead of competing purely on product volume, Asos is investing in the expertise layer that sits above it. If a customer can come to Asos not just for clothes but for a point of view on how to wear them, the platform becomes harder to replace with a cheaper alternative.
For Roach, the ASOS role gives him something his previous career never quite could: scale. His book “How to Build a Fashion Icon” was an explicit attempt to democratize the styling knowledge he had spent fifteen years applying exclusively to celebrity clients. The ASOS platform gives that mission a direct commercial channel. “I’ve always been fascinated by the power of fashion to transform how people see themselves and how they show up in the world,” he said. “What excites me about ASOS is the opportunity to help more people discover their own point of view through style.”
The Partnership Started with a Fashion Awards Look
The relationship between Law Roach and ASOS began earlier than Saturday’s announcement suggests. He told WWD that the conversation started a few years ago when ASOS dressed him for the Fashion Awards. “I really loved that look,” he said. “It was this sheer polka-dot top, and I felt really great in my body. From there, the relationship just developed.” That origin story matters because it frames the partnership as genuine rather than transactional, a distinction that Roach, given his 2023 exit from the industry over precisely that kind of inauthenticity, would have been unlikely to overlook.
Further elements of the partnership, including London Fashion Week activations and additional style-led projects, will be announced over the coming year. Roach is currently a judge on “Project Runway” Season 22 alongside Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks. His appointment at ASOS suggests that the 2023 retirement was less an ending and more an adjustment toward something larger.
