6 Most Historically Accurate War TV Shows Ranked

War TV shows, from lightning-in-a-bottle miniseries to long-running dramedies, have been capturing the imaginations of audiences for years with their historical accuracy. There are some projects that are purposefully fictionalized, dramatizing the events of past conflicts, but these shows attempt to prioritize attention to detail whenever possible, carving out their place in the genre because of this.

The TV shows that capture the horrors of war might not be historically accurate, as the reality of war often boils down to the slow, excruciating moments of waiting and wondering what will happen in between the explosive action. The war genre is very broad, as there has been conflict in every period of history, and the further back in time the show is set, the harder it is for it to be realistic.

However, it’s important to look at the larger context of the violence while being able to zoom in and focus on the individual characters and their lives. Historical accuracy isn’t the most important part of any period TV show, as sometimes the narrative calls for changes, but it does elevate the experience of viewers when the story is truer to life.

Rome (2005–2007)

Saying that HBO’s Rome is simply a war TV show would be too reductive, but there’s little question that the violence and conquest that defined the Roman Empire don’t play a large role in the series. When tackling an era that was so long ago, it can be difficult to get every detail right, but Rome digs into these facets of the show (via Collider).

The series touches upon many prominent figures and leaders in the Roman Empire, as well as foot soldiers carrying out orders and fighting the government’s wars from very far away. It’s these storylines that focus on the everyday events of the conflicts that the Roman Empire carried out, which are juxtaposed by the political dramas playing out at the seat of power in the empire.

Rome was notoriously expensive to make, so its cancellation after season 2 isn’t especially surprising. However, this meant that the series didn’t get the chance to dig into every facet of history that it might have, but the episodes that we do have enjoy mining the real dramas of the past for narratives that connect with modern audiences.

M*A*S*H (1972–1983)

Starring Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce, an army doctor working on the front lines of the Korean War, M*A*S*H* drew its story from the original 1970 movie, but expanded the narrative and characters well. Though M*A*S*H was set during the Korean War, it grappled with the contemporaneous impact of the Vietnam War and the prominent anti-war backlash in the U.S.

By allowing itself to be firmly set in one period but be relevant to the present day, M*A*S*H has been able to age well, especially since the series found a way to become more serious and dramatic as the show progressed. M*A*S*H was historically accurate in some surprising ways, as it touched upon some of the real events and discrimination that these characters would’ve face (via MovieWeb).

Of course, many of the pranks and shenanigans wouldn’t have been part of life in a medical unit during the war, but when M*A*S*H got serious, it became more accurate. The most intense scenes in the operating room are truer than audiences might expect, and the impact that the war has on Hawkeye and the other doctors is deeply felt, particularly in the iconic series finale, “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.”

The Pacific (2010)

The best World War II TV shows have a lot in common, as three of the best WWII miniseries share members of the same creative team. Almost a decade after Band of Brothers came out, The Pacific was released, focusing on the Pacific Theater, whereas the first show touched upon the front lines in Europe. This meant that its areas of focus were brutal in different ways.

Since the fighting in the Pacific Theater often took place in the air and on the sea, the series touches upon the Marines. It can be shocking and intense to watch because The Pacific is historically accurate, largely thanks to the intensity of the violence (via Collider). The characters are shown to be made brutal and are transformed in the wake of the cruelty around them.

It was important for The Pacific to be as historically accurate as possible, as U.S. citizens have long had a much murkier understanding of what this side of World War II was like. Even decades after the conflict was over, there was still a lot to learn about the Pacific Theater and what happened there, and The Pacific steps in as an answer to some of these questions.

Masters Of Air (2024)

The third installment of the companion series about World War II, Masters of Air, took to the skies to delve into how unromantic the reality of flying these dangerous aircraft was during the war. With a fantastic ensemble cast that includes Austin Butler, Callum Turner, and Barry Keoghan, to name a few, Masters of Air is elevated thanks to their performances and the dark tone of the show.

It’s no secret that war is often glamorized by the media, and that flying a fighter jet or piloting a bomber is made to seem flashy and thrilling. However, Masters of Air ensures that the audience takes the events onscreen seriously, as the characters are forced into tight spaces and made to spend hours in the air to reach their target, demonstrating the physical and mental strain (via GQ).

Packed with injury, illness, and high-stakes scenes that will break your heart, Masters of Air is one of the more recent additions to the war TV show genre that gets its subject matter right. Of course, the sleek look and high-budget feel of Masters of Air can sometimes take the viewer out of the action, but it has its fair share of grit.

Band Of Brothers (2001)

Largely considered one of the best war TV shows of all time, Band of Brothers benefited from its cast and creative team as well as its source material. Co-created by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg after the success of Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers lives up to the legacy of the film, never holding back when it comes to the terror and misery of war.

Based on Stephen E. Ambrose’s book of the same name, Band of Brothers focuses on the Easy Company. The series was able to be so realistic because Ambrose did extensive research and spoke to veterans who served in the company. There are some flaws, as the show needed to dramatize some characters for narrative effect, but Band of Brothers is accurate (via Collider).

It’s not surprising that audiences and critics keep returning to Band of Brothers after all these years, as it digs into the relationships of its cast of characters as much as it does their experiences in the war. However, this doesn’t mean that Band of Brothers was any less focused on the minutia of getting the period just right through costumes, sets, and props.

Generation Kill (2008)

Featuring one of the most accurate battle scenes in TV shows and relying on the skill of its cast to communicate the depth of the violence and horror of the conflict, Generation Kill is a shockingly real TV show. The series tackles the events of the recent past and is directly based on the experience of Evan Wright’s time as a journalist on the front lines during the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Generation Kill got a perfect accuracy rating from a veteran in a video with Insider, praising the realism of the battle sequences. Alexander Skarsgård is one of the biggest stars featured in Generation Kill, but the entire ensemble cast is critical for the realism of the show, as many of the characters are directly based on people who served during Wright’s time as an embedded reporter.

Touching upon a war that happened so recently, as Generation Kill came out in 2008, was a risk, as the invasion was still fresh in many audiences’ minds, and modern conflicts are heavily reported on and documented. However, this is why it’s so impressive that Generation Kill was able to achieve such a monumental narrative and deliver one of the most accurate shows we’ve seen so far.
