My footwear needs are quite extreme. In the wintertime, I need plush, shearling-lined boots that keep my always-too-cold feet cozy and warm. But come summer, I sweat—a lot. And naturally, so do my feet. I need something breathable and airy—not to mention lightweight and comfortable—because I walk a lot when the sun shines. Sure, you can call me complicated, but I just know what I like (and need!) and it seems Nicole Kidman agrees with me about one practical, but highly-divisive summer shoe that solves so many of my warm-weather woes.
@nicolekidman Instagram
Kidman, who recently vacationed in the French Riviera like the queen she is (#goals), posted a slew of Instagram photos of her dreamy getaway—think: lots of stunning views, summer-perfect outfits, and detail shots (read: feet pics) that showed off her vacation shoes. One pair stood out to me in particular: beige, toe-exposing mesh ballet flats, a shoe style that I’ve been wearing to death since I acquired my first pair from M.Gemi a month ago.
8 Mesh Ballet Flats for Summer
Mesh ballet flats are trending, but they also have their fair share of controversy. And, honestly, I get your concerns. Your feet are on full disply—but my new mantra for summer 2025 is suns out, toes out! The semi-sheer designs are most often crafted from a breathable netted mesh that allows for ample air circulation, making them the ideal warm-weather alternative to classic ballet flats.
So, if you’re curious to try the netted shoe trend Kidman and I are clearly in agreement on, check out some can’t-miss options below. Trust me: You’re going to live in them all season long.
M.Gemi the Amabile Mary Jane Flats in Sand
M.Gemi
These M.Gemi Mary Jane flats are incredibly comfy and lightweight, and I love that you can snag them in so many color options (I want them all).

Vivaia Almond-Toe Mary-Jane AdaptAll Flats
Viviaia
It was only a matter of time until viral shoe brand Vivaia churned out its own take on the mesh flats trend—and nailed it. The adjustable strap ensures a custom-like fit while the roomy toe-box ensures feet aren’t squished.
Madewell the Greta Ballet Flats
Madewell
While pricier, these Madewell ballet flats hit on so many key summer 2025 trends: the bright-red hue is a no-brainer for a welcomed pop of color when paired with summer whites. Use the code SUMMERTIME to get them for just $93.
Mango Buckle Strap Fishnet Ballet Flats
Nordstrom
The fishnet material on these Mango flats reads especially lightweight, which makes them an ideal pick for the hottest summer months. Plus, they’re available in three key colors: black, red, and Kidman-approved beige.
Call It Spring By Aldo Elyiaa Net Mary Jane Flats
Nordstrom
If you don’t want to spend a lot on shoes you’re not 100 percent certain about, consider testing the waters with this $45 Call It Spring style that’s an ideal entry point. The Mary Jane silhouette is *chef’s kiss* while the comfort is clearly there, too, thanks to the brand’s built-in comfort technology.
Dolce Vita Rodni Mary Jane Flats
Nordstrom
If a rounded toe isn’t your thing, consider these Dolce Vita Mary Janes with a sharp square-front for extra toe room. After all, the last thing you want is squished toes when they’re on display.
