Also planned are enhancements to the food and beverage spaces “to position the hotel as one of the finest guest experiences in the country.”
In addition, SHG has also exchanged contracts to purchase 98 Walmgate, which it says is “due for completion soon.”

The 170-year-old building went on the market for £2.775 million in November 2023.

SHG says they have bought it “with a view to converting the property into luxury hotel suites for long stay guests.”
Originally built as The George Hotel in the 1850s, guests will be able to access the wider facilities of The Grand, York which is nearby.
Furthermore, SHG is also “exploring the site plan” for Holiday Inn Express York, which it acquired in 2008.
It is considering adding extra bedrooms to “satisfy the continuing high levels of demand from both business and leisure guests.”
Plans are also afoot to upgrade the public areas to the new Holiday Inn Express design.
SHG’s investments comes at a time when York’s visitor economy continues to thrive.
In 2024 alone, tourism brought in just over £2billion to the York economy, marking a 5 per cent increase on the previous year, according to Make it York.
York also welcomed 9.4 million visitors last year, again a 5 per cent increase on 2023.
Similarly, the number employed employment in the tourism sector increased 4.8 per cent to 16,788 employees in 2024.
