Plans for new Haxby cash service take step forward

York Outer MP Luke Charters said provider Link confirmed that the threshold has been met to assess Haxby and its wider area’s access to cash.

Haxby’s Liberal Democrat councillors said the cash service is expected to be delivered via the Post Office, which is working on a new solution for the town after its last branch closed in May.

The exact details of the cash service, including its location, are yet to be confirmed.

Mr Charters described the update from Link as a “positive step forward” and said: “While [the announcement] means assisted cash services will help residents deposit and withdraw money locally, my focus remains firmly on securing a permanent solution, ideally through a full post office service, which would also include banking and cash services.”

He added: “So much of York’s economy is based outside the city centre, in community hubs like Haxby, Wigginton and Bishopthorpe, since I became the MP for York Outer I have been pushing for better cash, and banking access, at every level.”

Luke Charters, MP for York Outer (Image: Supplied) Discussing are ongoing on a temporary post office service at the Oaken Grove Community Centre, but the Liberal Democrats said the new cash service is “expected to be in place as soon as possible”.

Cllr Richard Watson said the update from Link is a “a welcome development for local people who have been left without even the most basic banking facilities”.

“Our next job is to keep the pressure on and make sure this is the start, not the end, of restoring proper banking services to our community,” he added.

“Haxby and Wigginton are growing communities, and the need for a full banking hub is only going to increase.
