How Doctor Doom Lifted Mjolnir in Marvel Comics, Explained

Since its creation, Odin’s enchantment on Mjolnir has stood steadfast as an unyielding litmus test in the Marvel Universe: “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” Over the years, noble heroes like Beta Ray Bill have proved their worthiness, showing fans that only the most selfless and pure-hearted characters can wield Mjolnir.

However, Victor von Doom broke all conventions by managing to lift Mjolnir. Marvel’s most tyrannical, ego-driven dictator didn’t just make a spontaneous face turn or suddenly turn good, nor was it a plot hole. Instead, Doom found a loophole in Odin’s enchantment, leading to a shocking moment when he wields Mjolnir and fights alongside the Avengers against a darker Doom.

Understanding Doctor Doom means looking at the comic events that build toward one of the most unexpected moments in comics. Since Doom stopped an attack from Stormbreaker in the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, many are curious whether this has happened before. Thus, this piece explains how Doom has wielded Mjolnir before, despite his unworthiness.

Is Doctor Doom Worthy? Marvel’s Official Answer to Whether Doom Can Lift Mjolnir

Marvel has made it clear that worthiness is not just a matter of strong willpower, noble goals, or conviction. Odin’s enchantment on Mjolnir is not an objective test, and a conqueror’s self-righteous justifications do not fool it. Victor has never been able to lift Mjolnir for this very reason, naturally.

Mjolnir was designed to measure a person’s moral alignment, humility, warrior spirit, and willingness to sacrifice their life in service to others. Victor von Doom may possess unparalleled willpower, a supreme intellect, and absolute conviction that his rule is the only path to world peace, but that does not make him worthy to wield Mjolnir.

Furthermore, Mjolnir’s enchantment does not take a wielder’s internal rationalizations into account when deciding who is worthy. Doom does not see himself as a villain but as a savior carrying humanity’s future on his shoulders, but his colossal ego is a barrier to his worthiness, and the enchantment requires one to serve others without expectation of worship or dominion.

Doom has repeatedly proven incapable of submitting to a higher moral order or anything else, whether gods, cosmic entities, or magical enchantments. He believes the universe is fundamentally flawed simply because he does not dictate its laws. To Doom, supreme authority over others is a birthright, making him the ideological antithesis of everything Mjolnir represents.

Doom’s interactions with Mjolnir have been repeatedly used to reconfirm his unworthiness explicitly. One of the most famous examples appears in Fantastic Four #536 and #537, during the aftermath of Ragnarok. After piggybacking on Mjolnir to escape hell, Doom fights his way to the hammer’s crash site in Oklahoma, believing the weapon was a gift intended for him.

Consequently, when Doom tried to lift it, it remained stationary, giving Doom a reality check that even after enduring the fires of hell, he remains unworthy in the eyes of Mjolnir. Even during moments when Doom achieved godlike power, such as during Secret Wars (2015) when he became God Emperor Doom, he remained unworthy of Mjolnir.

Ultimately, the comics confirmed Doom’s unworthiness directly in A+X #17. When Doom was trapped in an illusion where he defeated the Avengers and X-Men, one thing he did that broke the illusion was lifting Mjolnir. Doom’s own subconscious was able to recognize that feat as unrealistic, because Doom is self-aware enough to know he is not worthy.

Doom Wields Thor’s Hammer By Utterly Cheating Odin’s Rules

It’s been established in Marvel canon that, under normal circumstances, Doctor Doom is not worthy of wielding Mjolnir. Still, to fans’ surprise, Doom was able to lift it by circumventing the rules of the enchantment. In All-Out Avengers #2, Doctor Doom can be seen wielding Mjolnir and Captain America’s shield, leaving fans shocked and wondering how this came to be.

In All-Out Avengers, the reader is plopped into the middle of stories with no setup, no preamble, and no context. This is where the action starts, and the audience works back from this point. This structural conceit is what makes the opening splash page in Issue #2 land with such force.

The first thing that meets readers is Doom shouting, “Avengers Assemble!” while wielding both Captain America’s shield and Thor’s Mjolnir and leading She-Hulk, Black Panther, and Iron Man into battle. The opponent they are up against is a far more sinister version of Doom, a Doom who refers to himself as the one true Doom, more powerful than the original.

The explanation for these bizarre events comes in the form of the Soulsplitter Stone. Doom’s method for achieving this feat is both creative and perfectly in character, since he wields Mjolnir not by becoming worthy but through dubious means. He uses the Soulsplitter Stone, a magical relic, to split himself into two separate entities.

One entity contains all the good, regal, and honorable traits Victor Von Doom has at his best, while the other holds all the evil, ego, and lust for power that define him at his worst. The good Doom fighting alongside the Avengers is a different entity from the one that spent decades as one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains.

Moreover, it makes sense for the good Doom to be able to wield Mjolnir because all the traits that made him unworthy have been stripped away, and what remains is a selfless, honorable Doom that has been stripped of his ego and is actually worthy of the hammer. This, however, is not the original Doom, who remains unworthy.

In typical Doctor Doom fashion, he was able to cheat Mjolnir’s enchantment with his intellect and creative ingenuity. Doom managed the unprecedented and solved the worthiness problem without having to convince Mjolnir of his worthiness. Instead, he made himself worthy, on a technicality, proving that there is an exception to every rule.

What Doom Intercepting Mjolnir Means for the MCU

The release of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer has done an exemplary job framing Doctor Doom as a legitimate threat. In the same attack that was able to bring Thanos to his knees, Doom was able to stop it with two fingers. This was a deliberate and effective way to introduce Doom as a new, dangerous foe the Avengers must triumph against.

Doom casually blocking Thor’s strikes sparked debate among fans over whether he had somehow overcome the rule of worthiness. However, a look at the comics shows that Doom has never truly been worthy, and that a distinction must be made between stopping the weapon mid-swing with raw force, sorcery, or technology and actually being worthy to lift it.

Odin’s enchantment stops those deemed unworthy from lifting the hammer and wielding the power of the thunder god, but catching, blocking, or redirecting its kinetic momentum in the heat of battle does not constitute wielding it, so the enchantment does not apply. Despite that, it goes a long way to establish the power gap between Doom and the other Avengers.

Conclusively, what can be gleaned from Doom wielding Mjolnir in the comics is that Doom intrinsically could be worthy if only he were able to cast aside his more dishonorable traits. However, these traits are what make the character so enjoyable to watch on screen and follow on the page. A Doom devoid of hubris is not truly Doom.
