Apple TV+’s sci-fi series Invasion is set to return for season 3 this week, but the show’s creator, Simon Kinberg, has already stated that he has plans for another season. Invasion has gotten mixed reviews from audiences and critics, so its future will depend on how Invasion season 3 is received.
Invasion season 1 divided viewers with its slow-burn approach and disparate character stories. Invasion season 2’s ending set the stage for a much bigger season 3 that will need to explore the show’s biggest questions. Invasion season 3’s trailer hints that the upcoming episodes will do just that while infusing the series with more action.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Simon Kinberg shared his hopes that audiences would respond well to Invasion season 3, allowing him to complete his vision of a four-season show. Kinberg also teased that season 3 would provide some much-needed answers while leaving a few threads open for the story to continue. Read his full quote below:
Obviously, it’s ultimately up to the audience, but I’d always imagined that this was a four-season show. At the end of this season, there are some things that have some measure of closure, and there are some things that are still open, and I think there’s still real ground to cover with these characters. But, you know, that’s out of my hands, and really up to the audience.
Back in 2023, Simon Kinberg outlined his hopes for Invasion, noting that he had plans for seasons 3 and 4. Now that Invasion season 3 is almost here, Kinberg’s plans are closer to fruition than ever. Simon’s new comments only confirm that his vision for the series has remained impressively stable in the intervening years.
Kinberg’s earlier conception of Invasion highlighted that he viewed the different seasons as acts of a film, where the action is gradually building before coming to a big climax and resolution. If this remains true, then Kinberg’s comments both bode well for the increased action in season 3 and mean season 4 could have something bigger in store.
Invasion‘s slow pace has been a sticking point since season 1, but Simon Kinberg’s assertion that season 3 will provide some closure means audiences may finally get the answers we’ve waited for. Additionally, leaving a few doors open to continue the story in a final season means the show’s creators are still hopeful they can complete the gripping sci-fi epic.
Our Take On Simon Kinberg’s Invasion Season 4 Plans
Simon Kinberg is right to note that audience reception of Invasion season 3 will play an important role in determining whether he and co-creator David Weil will be able to bring the story to its planned conclusion. However, given that Invasion has received mixed reviews in the past and has still been renewed, it seems like Apple supports the series.
Invasion season 1 felt like a drama series, slowly introducing its lead characters and their struggles. Invasion season 2 then added more excitement and interaction with the aliens, so Kinberg’s initial plans seem to still be intact. If this is the case for season 3, then audiences will be in for an action-packed, alien-centric treat.
This may appeal to sci-fi audiences more than seasons 1 and 2, meaning Invasion‘s ratings could rise anyway. Given what Simon Kinberg has revealed about his season 4 plans and the time that viewers have already invested in Invasion, it would be a shame for the series to end prematurely, so I’m hoping season 3 can deliver on Kinberg’s plans.
