American singer Ciara has officially become one of the first public figures to receive citizenship from Benin under a groundbreaking new law that grants nationality to descendants of enslaved people. The Grammy-winning artist was honored at a ceremony on Saturday in Cotonou, where Benin’s Justice Minister Yvon Détchénou praised the initiative as “an act of justice, but also one of belonging and hope.” Ciara’s naturalization is part of a broader campaign by the West African country to reckon with its history in the transatlantic slave trade and welcome members of the African diaspora back home.
