Huddersfield Town loanee Cameron Humphreys expressed his “excitement” at being handed the captain’s armband for Saturday’s win at Plymouth Argyle.
The 22-year-old skippered the Terriers for their 2-0 victory at Home Park at the weekend, with captain Ryan Ledson and deputy Murray Wallace both sidelined through injury.
Humphreys received the armband despite being the youngest outfield player for Town on the day, and reflecting on being given the responsibility to lead the side, the midfielder told BBC Radio Leeds following Saturday’s win: “It was this morning (when he found out), maybe a little bit of shock but excitement, proud. Obviously there’s a few injuries, but I’m more than happy to do it.
“I’ve got a good relationship with all the players, obviously from being here a little bit last year, a really good relationship with the coaching staff and the gaffer, so I was happy, I was excited, but my focus didn’t change on trying to help the team win, and that was the main thing.
“I don’t feel a need to shout too much and scream, and get onto people, because I think we all knew what we needed to do. We were really well prepared going into the game.
“I enjoyed being captain, but really there were a lot of leaders all over the pitch, and so that obviously helped me, and I could almost focus on my own game really.”
On his decision to name Humphreys skipper for Saturday’s clash, head coach Martin Drury said: “I don’t mean this disrespectfully to anyone, but I really trust Cam.
“We’ve got a lot of leaders out injured right now. We’ve got Ledo obviously out, we’ve got Murray, we’ve got Balks (Radinio Balker), Jack Whatmough, we’ve got seven injuries right now.
“I just felt like some of the other players who people might’ve expected to wear the armband, I didn’t want to give them any extra weight other than focus on their performance, whereas Cam’s in rhythm, he’s playing every week, and although people say he’s not a ranter and a raver, you don’t have to be a ranter and a raver to be a captain. He leads by example.
“I trust him to get through 90 minutes, so I’m not putting an armband on someone that might then have to come off, but I trust him from that point of view.
“It wasn’t a big decision, it’s not a major thing. Every player on the pitch should be a captain and every sub that comes on should be a captain. Cam wore it today, but I felt it was a captain’s performance from many, many players today.”
