The defending champions of the tournament took on World Cup holders Spain in tonight’s (July 27) Euro 2025 final at St Jakob-Park in Basel.
Sarina Wiegman’s side started the final brightly and looked to put pressure on Spain from the outset.
Spain’s forward Caldentey scored a goal within the first 25 minutes of the match, while England’s Russo equalised shortly into the second half of the game.
After a tense 30 minutes of extra time, a penalty shootout ensured a win for the Lionesses with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning goal.
Spain had previously beaten England at their first World Cup final in 2023.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s final, England’s captain Leah Williamson, insisted that the team were “connected to what a victory means to the nation”.
She said: “We came to the tournament, we wanted to be here, we wanted to be in it until the end and have a chance to fight for that trophy.
“I think we don’t necessarily carry the weight of it, how much it means to people, but we’re aware of it because it means the same to us.
“The respect for the women’s game, the respect for women and women’s sport in general continues, and we can try our best to continue to elevate that.”
Weigman stated that England had “prepared for the challenge” despite being classed as the underdogs against Spain.
She also admitted to feeling nerves on the side-lines in big moments, despite maintaining a steely demeanour.

“I’m having a heart attack too, I just don’t show it,” she said.
The Lionesses are the nation’s first senior football side to win away from home after they lifted their first major trophy at Wembley after winning Euro 2022.
It is the third successive title for manager Wiegman, who also led the Dutch to victory in the tournament in 2017.
