Even on the biggest streaming service in the world, there are Netflix original series that seem to inexplicably evade notice. In recent years, there has been a palpable change to the very structure of television in the streaming age, as Netflix miniseries have irrefutably become the norm in place of long-running, multi-season titles. Of course, the short and sweet craze has produced some of the best shows of the century— like Adolescence and The Queen’s Gambit— but there are just as many miniseries that, for one reason or another, fade into undeserved obscurity.
Such is the case with Under a Dark Sun, a French murder mystery that quietly released in mid-July 2025. Yet, the international title unexpectedly took off on the streaming charts, becoming one of the most-viewed new shows of the summer. Despite its spike in viewership, however, the Netflix thriller failed to make lasting waves, forced to exist as just another title in the platform’s dense library. Regardless, Under a Dark Sun is a truly captivating thriller, and it’s not too late to award it with some well-deserved mainstream attention.
Under A Dark Sun Is a Flawless Drama Miniseries
Netflix Crafts A Murder Mystery That Hooks You From the Start
Nearly a year after its release, it has become abundantly clear that Under a Dark Sun is one of Netflix’s best thrillers of the 2020s. The exceptional 2025 miniseries follows Alba (Ava Baya), a struggling mother who takes a job in a Provençal flower farm run by the mysterious Lasserre family. Soon after she arrives, however, patriarch Arnaud (Thibault de Montalembert) suddenly dies, leaving the protagonist as a prime suspect in his murder investigation. To complicate matters further, Arnaud is revealed to allegedly be Alba’s father, giving her ample motive to claim her overdue inheritance.
Of course, the truth behind Arnaud’s death is far more complicated, and the series takes seemingly endless twists and turns before its grand conclusion. With only six episodes, Under a Dark Sun is a perfect binge that viewers can easily finish in a weekend, if not in one sitting. The action-packed inciting incident immediately captures the audience’s attention, but the roughly four-and-a-half hour runtime never slows down, meaning once you start, you’ll have a hard time hitting stop.
Not Enough People Are Talking About Under A Dark Sun
The Gripping French Mystery Flew Under The Radar For Many
Sadly, the classic murder mystery feel of Under a Dark Sun has proven to be a double-edged sword. The Netflix original has seriously flown under the radar, due in no small part to it being an international title. The subtitles are a small price to pay, however, for the phenomenal acting and eye-catching cinematography. Those who have seen Under a Dark Sun can attest that it unquestionably deserved more global acclaim, particularly in North American demographics.

Undoubtedly, Under a Dark Sun‘s lack of universal commendation is not a fair reflection of its quality. Ironically, being released on Netflix can both help and hurt a new series, as the revolving door of original and acquired content makes it an uphill battle for any show to succeed. The television market is a fickle thing, meaning understated gems like Under a Dark Sun can quickly get lost in the chaos.
Despite Dividing Critics, Under A Dark Sun Is A Must-Watch
The International Thriller Is Exactly What It’s Trying To Be
Admittedly, there were other reasons contributing to Under a Dark Sun’s obscurity, including the mixed reception it got from critics. The miniseries was critiqued for its intense pacing, predictable storyline, and overly complicated twists, but it truthfully delivers exactly what it set out to. The fusion of a classic whodunit with French Noir elements evokes a cozy mystery à la Agatha Christie’s best novels, while the sprawling scenery of Southern France made for a delightfully immersive watch.
8 Best Netflix Shows You’ve Never Heard Of
Although Netflix’s viral hits currently dominate the streaming landscape, there are several great TV shows on the platform that you’ve never heard of.
It may not be dreadfully serious prestige television, but the streaming success of Under a Dark Sun is proof positive that it’s an acquired taste. In the miniseries’ opening week alone, it rose to the #5 spot on the U.S. streaming chart and hit #2 on Netflix’s global chart. Not every mystery needs to reinvent the wheel, and Under a Dark Sun is a welcome reminder that there’s nothing wrong with pure fun.
