‘Get a grip York: attract people instead of alienating them’

I HAVE to say that I totally agree with Richard Whiteside (The Press, April 2) who is disagreeing with the “tourist tax” in York.

Who even thought of putting a tourist tax in place?

York is expensive enough without ripping people off even more by adding a tax because someone wants to visit this delightful, historic city.

The council wants to concentrate on making it more consumer friendly by cutting prices not raising them!

I went to the art gallery last week and it is almost £10 to get in – ridiculous.

Also there needs to be some more public toilets (free of charge) and more to do in the evenings for those who are not drinkers.

Everything closes down at 5pm, including the toilets, which is ridiculous for a tourist city.

GET A GRIP York and attract people instead of alienating them.

April Fool’s Day is no laughing matter

APRIL Fool’s Day arrived but this is no joke as the government has allowed massive price hikes across our country which will hurt many people for years to come.

April Fool to the government thinking they can get away with this insult; April Fool upon us on voting this government in thinking this vote would create a fairer climate for the poorest within Britain today and April Fool for the government at the next election who think the electorate will have short memories.

… ON reflection, the choice of April Fool’s Day for increases in National Insurance, TV licence, car tax, business rates and council tax, energy costs to take effect is very apt, for that is what Starmer and Co are taking the public to be – FOOLS – for which hopefully sooner rather than later they themselves will pay a heavy price, never again to be in charge of our lives.

Also, if ever there was an illustration of politicians not having a clue on how to execute their promises, it is PM Starmer and Home Secretary Cooper on “smashing the gangs”. Sending every increasing number of illegal immigrants across the channel, between them they have spent hours expounding enough “hot air” on the subject to damage their own net zero targets, a perfect example of ” all talk” and no ACTION achieving absolutely nothing but what else can we expect from two inept politicians.
