High time we saw an end to pavement parking in York

FRIDAY November 22 marked four years since the previous government’s consultation on pavement parking in England closed.

Cars parked on, and sometimes hogging the whole pavement, will be a familiar sight to many.

Pavement parking is dangerous especially for families with young children, people with sight loss and disabled people.

A recent poll found that 87 per cent of parents have had to walk in the road because of a vehicle blocking the pavement. It damages pavement surfaces too.

Living Streets has been campaigning on this issue for over 50 years and it’s high time we saw an end to the problem.

Pavement parking has been banned (with exemptions) in London since the 1970s. Scotland adopted a similar approach to London which came into force earlier this year. The Welsh Government has indicated they will take action on pavement parking – but England is way behind.

We hope your readers will join Living Streets and supporters like me, in urging the new Government to deal with the troubling legacy of pavement parking once and for all. Everyone will be the better for it.

Forget Spark:York – what about Brexit?

I HAD to allow myself a little chortle at Christian Vassie’s letter (Wednesday, January 29) getting hot under the collar about Matthew Laverack moaning about Spark York, and the number of times he writes in about it.

Pot, kettle, black springs to mind. Brexit?

Greetings to all!

Cuts are thankfully being unpicked by Labour

SO, the UK’s most senior civil servant has dismissed Robert Jenrick’s lies and smears about the Attorney General.

This simply underlines how Robert Jenrick is nothing more than a snivelling hypocrite and political opportunist.

All coming from a Conservative Party that opposed breakfast clubs, opposed reduced school uniform costs for parents, opposed better controls over home schooling, hate the fact that NHS waiting lists are coming down, hate people wanting to feel secure in their rented homes, hate improvements to military families housing, hate veterans being prioritised for homes, did nothing about Covid fraud, and ignored the rape gangs inquiry recommendations so their MPs could all jump on a bandwagon in opposition.

Indeed, under a Conservative government, three times they failed when the Southport killer was referred to Prevent, ten times he was known to the police for having knives and on numerous occasions social workers visited him with security due to concerns.

All due to cuts in frontline public services by the Conservatives.

Cuts that are thankfully being gradually unpicked by a Labour government.

Microchip me? No thanks

I SUSPECT Mr Deamer (Letter of January 16 re: National Identity cards) may have been watching too many science fiction films.

Microchips are to trace cats and dogs, not humans.

For a start, all organisations, including polling booth staff, requiring identification would need access to microchip readers.

The mind boggles at the thought of confidential medical and banking information etc., being being disclosed to all and sundry.

Microchip me? No way.
