I SHARE Mr Deamer’s sadness over the closure of what was also my local supermarket.

Like him I visited it as it prepared to close its doors but one hour later arriving at 5 50pm and deliberately hung back until the shoppers gradually left before going through the checkout as its last customer and claiming the final till receipt timed at 18.05.

I will add it to the final edition of the York Press that ‘Les’ ever sold before retiring from his familiar pitch in St Helens Square which I also have.

Political parties need actions to improve lives

KEMI Badenoch’s speech marks a rare moment of honesty from a Conservative leader, finally admitting to the reckless governance that led to Brexit without a plan, immigration policies driven by rhetoric rather than strategy, and net zero commitments made without a clear roadmap. While her candour is notable, her focus on winning over Reform voters only highlights the Conservatives’ inability to move beyond their failures and articulate a viable future.

Labour, however, is no better. They ran a campaign designed to win, offering  an easy promise of change, but now seem unprepared for the reality of running the country. They said they’d fix public services without raising taxes, but with a weak economy, they’re struggling to deliver. Rachel Reeves has already resorted to short-term fixes instead of offering a clear long-term plan.

As for Nigel Farage’s Reform, their populist rhetoric may exploit public discontent, but it offers no meaningful solutions to the challenges we face. Promising the earth while being vague on delivery is a familiar story – and one Britain cannot afford to repeat.

We must demand more than platitudes from all parties. Britain needs leaders who will act on the climate crisis, build a fairer economy, and restore trust in politics with honest, practical and evidence-based plans.

Neither the Conservatives’ confessions, Labour’s electoral success, nor Reform’s slogans will mean much without action that genuinely improves lives.
