FOLLOWING her sold-out Agatha Christie tour, historian Lucy Worsley will delve into the life of Jane Austen.
In these talks, Ms Worsley will explore the world of the “beloved author of timeless classics” such as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion.
A “fascinating look” at Austen’s life, linked to her cherished dwellings and possessions, will reveal a passionate woman with at least five marriage prospects.
Speaking to Somerset Life, Lucy detailed a surprise about the author’s character that many people would not know; ‘I think I can deduce that she was a real risk-taker and rule-breaker. People are often surprised by this because they assume she was a kind of buttoned-up, repressed spinster, who went to a lot of tea parties. But I love pointing out, for example, that there are some extremely rude jokes in Jane Austen’s books! And as for her life choices, I believe Jane turned down a marriage offer from a very rich man in order to take the terribly risky path – for her social class and time – of becoming a professional writer.
On asked on what audiences at the show expect, she said: I’m going to be having a ball: telling my own version of the story of this wonderful woman, someone who I think very quietly changed the world for all women. And I’ll be answering questions not just on Jane Austen but on any topic people want to throw at me! If I’d asked nicely, I might even tell some of Jane Austen’s extremely rude jokes.
Worsley will bring the discussion to the Festival Theatre on Sunday, May 25 at 7pm.
