A Vermont man has gone missing after embarking on a solo fishing trip.
Charles Arnold, 70, had set out to fish on Friday, Sept. 19, on Lake Memphremagog’s South Bay area in Vermont, according to NBC Boston, CBS affiliate WCAX and ABC affiliate WVNY.
He was last in contact with his family by cellphone around 12:30 p.m. local time, and when he failed to return home just before 9 p.m., his family contacted authorities to report him missing as an “overdue fisherman,” the Newport Police Department shared on Facebook.
Police then sent personnel to the lake’s South Bay Fishing Access and launched a search party to try and locate Arnold on Friday evening.
They enlisted help from four local fire departments — including Newport City. Derby Line, Troy and Orleans — as well as the Newport Ambulance Service, Vermont Fish & Wildlife and state police.
Between the departments and agencies, the search party included a range of water crafts, medical standby, drones and a dive unit.
After a multi-hour search, Arnold was not located.
But the man’s kayak, an orange and black vessel, was spotted near the South Yard area near Glen Road, the Newport Police said. Inside the kayak was Arnold’s life jacket.
The Friday search was suspended at midnight, and was set to resume at daylight on Saturday, Sept. 20. Newport Police have yet to provide further updates on the search for Arnold.
The Newport Police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Arnold — described as a white male of medium build, with white hair and a white goatee — was last seen wearing a dark plaid long-sleeve shirt and shorts.
