Martin Drury’s ‘real threat’ claim as Huddersfield Town boss excited over player

The new recruit made his first appearance for the Terriers in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Bromley

Huddersfield Town boss Martin Drury believes that Samson Tovide will prove to be a “real threat” for his side once he gets up to full speed.

The new recruit made his first appearance for the Terriers in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Bromley, with the forward brought on just after the hour mark.

The 22-year-old became Town’s ninth and final summer signing earlier this month, with the deal completed in the days following the transfer window’s closure.

Discussing Tovide’s first Terriers’ bow, Drury told BBC Radio Leeds: “We definitely learned from it. We learned of the qualities that he can bring, we learned of the things that we need to help him get better at, we learned where he’s at from a physical point of view, so every game gives us something to learn from and get better at.

“I have no doubt over time, we’ll help Samson to be a real, real threat for us, and a real quality addition to the group, but it’s true, again as I’ve said with a couple of players we’ve brought in, he’s lacked a pre-season, so he’s not quite there physically, and again it’s League One, it’s not League Two, so there’s loads of things for him to take from today and learn from today, but I’ve got every confidence in him.”

Fellow Town forward Ashley Fletcher got off the mark for the club in Saturday’s loss at Hayes Lane, who glanced home Cameron Humphreys’ wide free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

The 30-year-old has featured in all nine of Town’s matches this season following his summer arrival from Blackpool, and following the striker’s maiden goal for his new side, Drury added: “Credit to Ashley. He’s kept plugging away, and he’s a quality human being who works his nuts off every single day, and he deserves the goal, and he’s worked incredibly hard to do that.

“He should’ve had more by now, he knows that, and he’s frustrated with that, but I’m excited for what the future holds now. He’s opened his account, and I’m sure he’ll go on to get more goals for us.”
