Netflix may have finally found its perfect Yellowstone replacement after testing multiple Western series over the last few years. Since Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone and other great shows such as Landman and 1923, has an exclusive deal with Paramount, Netflix has been trying to capitalize on Yellowstone’s popularity on its own platform.
Netflix has found some success with its original Western shows in the past, most notably its standout 2017 series Godless, which won three Emmys, including Outstanding Supporting Actor for Jeff Daniels. Lately, however, Netflix has been upping its slate of Western-themed content in 2025, starting with American Primeval in January and continuing with Ransom Canyon in April, as well as the recently released Untamed.
Ransom Canyon Can Be Netflix’s Long-Term Version Of Yellowstone
It’s Based On A Popular Book Series & Was A Streaming Hit For Netflix
Ransom Canyon season 1 was a big hit for Netflix in the first half of 2025. Not only did it rank in the top 40 for total TV viewership from January to June 2025 with 29 million views, but if you go by hours viewed, it’s in the top 20 of global TV shows on the streaming platform (228.9 million).
Even though Ransom Canyon has already been renewed for season 2, that level of popularity bodes well for it to have a much longer-term future, which is what it’d need to truly be Netflix’s version of Yellowstone. The series is also based on a successful book series by Jodi Thomas, setting it up nicely for a long tenure.

While there’s no true replacement for Yellowstone, Ransom Canyon offers many similar elements, even though it is ultimately more of a romantically driven story than Yellowstone ever was. That said, the Ransom Canyon book series is more of an anthology than a set of sequels, suggesting that Netflix could make key changes to emulate some of Yellowstone’s more gritty and action-oriented moments.
Netflix Has Also Got Another Western Hit It Needs To Renew
American Primeval Earned 47 Million Views Earlier This Year
Netflix is also still riding on the popularity of American Primeval, which was a very big January 2025 release that earned 47 million views. Although it’s not really similar to Yellowstone, it’s most similar to 1883 out of all Sheridan’s shows. Regardless, American Primeval has the potential for further expansion, either with a season 2 or a spinoff/prequel series.
