The Harrogate-based bakery and tearooms business informed its online customers that Bettys’ website database had been compromised.
The breach was attributed by communications director Rachel Fellows to “an industry-wide software weakness,” in the words of this paper at the time.
Ms Fellows assured that credit or debit card details had not been copied, as they were stored on a separate system managed by a certified third party.
However, customer information such as names, email addresses, postal addresses, encrypted passwords, and telephone numbers may have been accessed.
Ms Fellows added: “The software issue has been addressed and further security measures have been put in place.
“Whilst customer passwords were encrypted, there is a risk that they could still be vulnerable, so we’re contacting all customers with details of the situation and advice regarding password protection.”
