Peak District spots among UK’s best to watch the sunset

The Peak District is known for its stunning views and opportunities for adventure but have you watched a sunset there?

The countryside is a great spot to watch the world go by while being treated with the gorgeous colours as the sun goes down.

To help you choose your next sunset spot, experts at Blacks analysed social media data to determine the best UK nature spots for sunrises and sunsets.

A few spots in the Peak District feature in the list – let’s take a look.

Best Peak District spots to watch the sunset

Calum Jones, blog author and outdoor enthusiast at Blacks, said: “With spring finally here, there is no better time to start heading outside and enjoying your surroundings.

“Whether you’re an early riser looking to catch the first light of the day or like to watch the day unwind as the sun sets, there are several spots around the UK which offer spectacular scenery.

“From the mountains to beaches, we have revealed the best viewpoints across the UK to watch the sun rise or set.”

Mam Tor

Mam Tor is the highest-ranked sunset spot in the Peak District on the list (2nd place) as 269 Instagram posts are tagged with #MamTorSunset.

#MamTorSunrise is attached to 1,081 Instagram posts, making the total for the two hashtags 1,350.

Visit Peak District & Derbyshire said on its website: “Mam Tor, meaning ‘Mother Hill’, is a 517 metre high hill near Castleton in the High Peak area of Derbyshire and is one of the most famous walks in the Peak District that well and truly deserves a place on your Peak District bucket list!”

It added: “Mam Tor sits on the edge of the Dark Peak (gritstone) and the White Peak (limestone) which means you get some fantastic views of the limestone parts of the National Park, such as the dry gorge of Winnats Pass.

“Winnats Pass is always a favourite amongst photographers so make sure you bring your camera!”

You might also hear Mam Tor be called the Shivering Mountain, here’s why: “Mam Tor is also referred to as the ‘Shivering Mountain’ because of its propensity for landslips caused by unstable lower levels of shale.”

Bamford Edge

Another spot in the Peak District that’s recommended for watching sunsets is Bamford Edge which was ranked in 5th place.

The hashtags #BamfordEdgeSunset and #BamfordEdgeSunrise have a combined total of 143 Instagram posts.

Bamford Edge has proved popular on review site Tripadvisor with visitors rating it 4.6 stars from 31 reviews.

One visitor said: “We did a lovely circular walk. Paths were well kept and route easy to follow. Views are stunning over Ladybower. Heather was in bloom making a colourful background.”

Another commented: “Been wanting to do this walk for a long time. We parked at Heatherdene car park. Toilets and water refill station. I would advise good supportive footwear/ walking boots. I also used my walking pole which was helpful in places.

“The walk up you go through very thick ferns, beautiful woodland area, pass boulders, stoney paths in places. It’s a beautiful walk and the views from the top are absolutely stunning. Lovely to sit on the rocks and take in the breath taking view. Happy days”.

Curbar Edge

You could also try to watch the sunset at Curbar Edge or get their in time for the sunrise.

#CurbarEdgeSunset and #CurbarEdgeSunrise are used on 61 Instagram posts, according to the data from Blacks which puts this spot in 7th place.

Curbar Edge is “a popular place for walkers and climbers with stunning views across Chatsworth and beyond”, says Visit Peak District & Derbyshire.

It added: “A popular place for walkers and climbers, Curbar Edge offers stunning views across the Derwent Valley and beyond. It overlooks Chatsworth and the nearby villages of Curbar, Froggatt and Calver.

“There are numerous popular climbing routes and places to enjoy walks nearby, which run along the top of the edge before descending gently on to moorland trails and shady woodland paths alongside the River Derwent.”

Baslow Edge

On Instagram, 24 posts have been shared with the hashtags #BaslowEdgeSunset and #BaslowEdgeSunrise.

Baslow Edge is ranked in 10th place on the list and it’s been highly praised on Google Reviews.

This area of the Peak District has received 97 reviews on Google with the overall rating being an impressive 4.9.

One visitor said: “With a handy (but small ) car park in between both baslow edge and Cubar edge it means that you can enjoy amazing views without the climb. A relatively flat walk there is something to see everywhere you look. There are some picnic tables near the parking area too and it’s a great way to while away a few hours”.

This person shared their experience: “Impropmtu visit to watch the sunset. Watched from Curbars edge numerous times but decided to go to Baslow for a change. Though the view wasn’t quite as dramatic with the colours from the sunset this side, it was still spectacular.

“The highlight was the cows, a firm favourite of mine. Baslow Edge is a lovely walk during the time with some great views. Well worth a visit.”

Calum at Blacks also shared some tips for those who are chasing the sunset or hoping to catch the sunrise.

He said you should wear appropriate clothing, bring a torch, watch your footing, protect your skin and eyes, bring food and water and respect your surroundings.
