The winner is set to be announced during the week of May 27 and each copy of The Press in the coming days will feature a short profile on each business and why it thinks it deserves to be voted number one in York and the surrounding area.
Poppleton Village Butchers in Allerton Drive, Nether Poppleton, has been owned by Danny Hopcutt since 2023, after he took over the shop from Viking Butchers.
As the owner of York Wholesale Meats, Danny has been connected to the meat trade for his whole life – with his grandfather managing a number of butcher shops, before opening his own in Burton Stone Lane, and his father owning a national wholesale meat company.

After having to shut his wholesale shop during Covid, Danny missed the retail side of the business and ended up taking on the shop – opening Poppleton Village Butchers with a focus on local meat products.
He said: “I’m pretty hands on with things and I go where I’m needed. It’s hard work juggling two businesses, but you put out what you put in.

All meat at Poppleton Village Butchers is bought locally – with Danny frequenting local markets – and is boned out in shop, with sausages and burgers prepared by the butchers on site.
The shop also stocks award winning pies, which are bought in Voakes in Green Hammerton and include gluten free options – giving more people the chance to enjoy them.

“We also have fantastic staff in the butchers. I want to thank Harrison Hirst – he does a fantastic job at running our front of house.”
Poppleton Village Butchers is open from 8am to 4.30pm from Tuesday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on a Saturday.
