Love is in the air for Anna Kendrick. The Another Simple Favor star has reportedly been dating comedian Alex Edelman for “several months,” an exclusive source told People in July 2025. Kendrick and Edelman were photographed sitting in a car together in L.A. ahead of the news of their relationship.
According to People’s source, the relationship “doesn’t seem casual,” as Kendrick celebrated the Emmy Award winner’s 36th birthday with him in March—and even “met his mom.” But don’t expect the Pitch Perfect actress to be kissing and telling anytime soon. “Anna’s very private, though,” the source noted. “They enjoy date night at low-key restaurants that are not your typical celeb hangouts.”

Kendrick previously opened up about surviving an emotionally abusive relationship and how it shifted her approach to dating. In a 2024 appearance on the podcast Call Her Daddy, she shared that she initially missed signs of abuse from her unnamed ex.
“It came out of absolutely nowhere, but was built on this foundation of—I had so much love and trust for that person, so I thought it had to be me. Like, if one of us is crazy, it must be me. So it was very, very difficult to actually go, ‘No, I think this is him. I think this is his stuff,’” she told host Alex Cooper.
In the same interview, Kendrick revealed her nonnegotiable rule for future relationships: “I’m never getting involved with a man—meaning we’re not even kissing, we’re not even going to have a real conversation—unless you are in or have been in therapy.”
It appears Edelman, 36, met the criteria. With the two comic performers reportedly getting serious, here’s everything to know about Anna Kendrick’s boyfriend, Alex Edelman.

According to a 2015 New York Times article, Edelman is from Brookline, Massachusetts, a suburban town that’s part of the greater Boston metropolitan area. In his HBO comedy special Just for Us, he jokes that he grew up in “a really racist part of Boston called…Boston,” per Vanity Fair.
The comedian expanded on his thoughts about his hometown in an April 2024 appearance on the magazine’s Little Gold Men podcast. “[Boston is] extremely money and working class. It’s extremely Jewish and not Jewish. It’s extremely urban and also, just a few miles outside of it, ex-urban and then downright agrarian. It is a really special, strange, wonderful, awful, intellectual, dumb place,” he said.
It was there that he developed his comedic chops, attending open mics at a local pizzeria beginning in the mid-2000s. “I was so terrible the first time that the MC told me she was embarrassed for me,” Edelman told The Comic’s Comic in 2015. “[A]nd so I went back to perform every Tuesday for years, and the resulting defiant anger from that initial show didn’t abate until I had already moved out of the city.”
As revealed in his breakout comedy special, Edelman has two brothers: AJ, who is his identical twin, and Austin. AJ is an Israeli Olympian, having competed for the country at the 2018 Winter Olympics in sliding sports. The comedian has also mentioned his parents in his standup, sharing that his father, Elazer R. Edelman, is a cardiologist and professor at MIT.

Edelman left Boston for NYC, studying English at NYU (under acclaimed author Zadie Smith, no less) and doing a semester abroad in the UK. While across the pond, he landed a comedy radio show at BBC 4, per Esquire. Perhaps more pivotally, in London, he met writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge and a variety of other talented comedians.
“[T]here was a movement of sort of more theatrical solo show comedy that was coming out of the UK, like James Acaster and Josie Long and Stewart Lee,” he explained to The Washington Post editor Jonathan Capehart on his podcast in 2024.
The semester abroad proved essential for Edelman’s future acts, as he learned how to fuse theater with comedy and English stylings with American ones. But it was NYU that made it into one of his bits, titled “Attending NYU,” which was uploaded to YouTube in 2021.
“[NYU] was the only school I got into,” he joked. “And I showed up on the first day, and I dropped my stuff off at the dormitory, and I was like, ‘Where’s the campus?’ And the RA giving the tour went, ‘What campus?’”
He won an Emmy and a special Tony for his comedy show Just for Us.

In 2017, Edelman secretly attended a white nationalist meeting in Queens. He used the night as material while shaping Just for Us, his breakout comedy show that made it from Edinburgh Fringe to Broadway.
The 36-year-old told American Theatre he wrote the show “to explore the tribes we’re a part of, what we take away from them, and what we carry with us into other rooms.”
He also received a 2024 Special Tony Award for Just For Us’s run on Broadway. While the prestigious awards have certainly raised Edelman’s profile, he’s no stranger to the spotlight. In 2014, his first solo comedy show, Millennial, was a recipient of the Edinburgh Comedy Award. He also appeared in the Netflix comedy Unfrosted, a Jerry Seinfeld film about the invention of Pop-Tarts.
As for what’s next for the comic, he’s developing a film for A24 about a humorous childhood experience celebrating Christmas despite being Jewish. Wicked producer Marc Platt is also attached to the project, according to a 2024 Deadline article.

Before becoming the object of Kendrick’s affections, Edelman was linked to comedian Katherine Ryan. Rumors of their breakup swirled around the comedy scene in early 2020, which he confirmed in an interview with Jewish Telegraph.
“She is wonderful and still a part of my life, but we are not together any more,” he said. “We still get along and talk extremely frequently.” Edelman even thanked Ryan, her daughter Violet Ryan, and her husband Bobby Kootstra in the program for Just for Us—alongside another ex of his, actress Hannah Einbinder.

Einbinder, the star of Hacks and child of Saturday Night Live original cast member Laraine Newman, kept her relationship with Edelman out of the spotlight while they were dating. The pair briefly discussed their bond in a 2022 appearance on the Naked Lunch podcast. They also attended the Season 2 premiere of Hacks together in May of that year.
He was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2024.
As Edelman’s show Just for Us blew up onstage and onscreen, the comedian found himself receiving the honor of being named one of the 100 most influential people of 2024 by Time. Writing the bio for his feature was none other than Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whom he met during his semester abroad in London.

“Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of watching Alex Edelman consistently dazzle audiences in basement clubs, backs of taxis, comedy festivals, friends’ kitchens, and iconic London theaters. Alex’s ability to hold people in the palm of his hand is otherworldly,” Waller-Bridge wrote in the introduction to the profile.
“It was no surprise then that when his tour de force show Just for Us—about racist white nationalists, internet trolling, and antisemitism—landed on Broadway earlier this year, it was lauded as one of the funniest, most human pieces of work in years,” she continued later in the piece, praising him as a “loyal friend” and an “optimist.”
Edelman reacted to that last label in a December 2024 interview with The Guardian. “Well, I always think the worst is going to happen, but I always think we can do something about it,” he explained, going on to say, “I think that [Waller-Bridge] describes me as that because, ultimately, I’ve been the beneficiary of a lot of grace.”
