My air fryer whole chicken recipe is crispy on the outside and juicy and moist in the middle. It’s a fast and easy way to cook an entire chook! This method has become my family’s go-to shortcut for Sunday roast.
If my family could enjoy their favorite takeout chicken and chips every night, they would, but I have one delicious trick up my sleeve that stops them: my air fryer whole chicken.
Air frying a whole chicken is a great idea if you want to enjoy a tender and juicy chicken with extra crispy skin. It’s similar in timing to my Instant Pot whole chicken, but the skin is just THAT much more crispy.
In recipe testing, I found that the key to achieving perfect results was starting the chicken breast-side down, so the delicate white meat stays juicy, and then flipping it to finish crisping the skin. A quick spice rub and rest after cooking makes all the difference- and now my family says it tastes even better than their favorite takeaway roast.

Air fryer whole chicken recipe highlights
- Quicker than oven roasting. A whole chicken cooks in the air fryer in under an hour, which is much faster than oven-roasting- but still gives that same golden finish.
- Consistent results. After testing various air fryers and different chicken sizes, I’ve found that this method consistently delivers tender meat and crispy skin.
- Healthier method. You’ll use a fraction of the oil or butter compared to oven-baked chicken, but still get a crispy golden bird. My family loves it with a side of air fryer baby potatoes or red potatoes for a complete meal.
Key Ingredients
Find the printable recipe with measurements below.
- Whole chicken. I usually use a 3-pound chicken because it fits comfortably in most standard basket-sized air fryers and serves 4 to 6 people. Through testing, I’ve found the size cooks evenly and stays juicy without drying out. See my timing and chicken guide size below.
- Olive oil. Keeps the chicken moist and crisps up the skin.
- Salt and pepper. To season.
- Spices. I used smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, and mustard powder. You can swap it out for your favorite poultry seasoning (this typically also includes garlic powder, onion powder, dried basil, and oregano).
- Rosemary. Fresh rosemary adds a sweet aroma and flavor.
Cooking time and chicken size
The exact cooking time depends on both the size of your air fryer and your air fryer model. From my testing, a 3-pound chicken is the sweet spot: it fits most standard basket-style air fryers and cooks evenly without drying out. Larger birds work too, but make sure there’s enough space for air to circulate the chicken, or the skin won’t crisp properly. Here are my tested guidelines when cooking at 400°F:
- 3-4 pound chicken: 40-50 minutes
- 4-5 pound chicken: 50-55 minutes
- 5-6 pound chicken: 55-60 minutes
Tip: Use a meat thermometer. Cooking times are a guide, but the only reliable way to check doneness is with a meat thermometer. Once the thickest part of the chicken (usually the breast) reaches 165°F, it’s ready to carve and serve.
Chef tips for perfect air fryer roast chicken
- Truss for even cooking. In culinary school, I was taught to always truss a whole chicken before roasting- it keeps the bird compact, allowing it to cook evenly and stay juicy. All it means is tying the legs together with kitchen twine and tucking the wings underneath (like in my pictures and recipe video below).
- Check with a thermometer. Don’t rely only on timing- every air fryer is a little different. The chicken is ready once the thickest part of the breast reaches 165°F.
- Consider brining. For extra moisture and flavor, brine the chicken for several hours or overnight in a mix of water, sugar, and salt (4 cups water, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/4 cup salt). This step isn’t essential, but when I’ve brined, the meat has been noticeably more tender.
- Rest before carving. Let the chicken sit for at least 5 minutes after cooking. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the meat moist when sliced.
Frequently asked questions
Most standard basket-style air fryers can comfortably fit a 3-4 pound chicken, which is what I recommend for best results. Larger, oven-style air fryers can handle birds up to 5-6 pounds. I’ve tested both, and while bigger chickens work, make sure there’s space for air to circulate, or you won’t have crispy skin.
Yes! Spatchcocking (cutting along the backbone so the chicken lies flat) helps it cook faster and more evenly. This is a great option if your air fryer basket is on the smaller side. You can learn more about spatchcocking in my spatchcock turkey recipe.
Keep leftover chicken in the fridge, covered, for up to five days. You can even freeze portions for up to 6 months.
To keep the skin crispy, reheat portions in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes. The microwave works in a pinch, but the skin won’t stay as crispy.
Technically, yes, but I don’t recommend it. I tested this, and the outside cooks before the inside has thawed properly, resulting in uneven results. For the best outcome, thaw the chicken fully in the fridge overnight.

Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (180°C). Grease the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
In a small bowl, combine the salt, pepper, smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, Rosemary, and mustard powder. Rub the spices all over the chicken.
Place the chicken in the air fryer breast side down. Air fry for 25 minutes, then flip and cook for an additional 25 minutes. Once the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F, remove it from the air fryer.
Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before carving.
- Chicken size and cooking time: I break this down in my post. Continue air frying until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
- Trussed chicken: To truss a chicken, tie the legs together with kitchen twine and tuck the wings underneath the body. Here’s a great guide on Masterclass with video and step-by-step instructions.
- Leftovers: Keep in the fridge for 5 days or the freezer for 3 months.
- Reheating: For best results, reheat chicken in the air fryer at 350°F until the skin is crisp.
