On Saturday, March 29, the Trust will mark the 70th anniversary of York City’s famous FA Cup semi-final appearance against Newcastle United.
The fixture took place between Third Division North side York City against top division outfit Newcastle at Hillsborough, Sheffield.
City brought an incredible 21,000 supporters with them on the day, and spectacularly forced a replay after a 1-1 draw. This was the first time that a Third Division team had ever done so.
The Trust will be working alongside long-time supporter Dave Smith, from Warrington, in organising a celebratory dinner to bring back together fans who attended the match, 70 years ago.
This event will take place at City’s National League match with Wealdstone on Saturday, March 29 (3pm) at the LNER Community Stadium, as this is the closest fixtured date to the actual anniversary date, which is March 26.
As a part of the event, the Trust will host four tables in the club’s Jorvik Lounge, whilst also self-funding one of those tables.
The Trust are also on the lookout for sponsors for the event, which will be priced at £470. For sponsoring the event, a pre-match dinner will be included, which will also involve a questions and answers segment with City legend Iain Dunn.
There will be half-time tea and coffee available, as well as the option for guests to stay behind after the full-time whistle for drinks in the LNER Lounge.
Terry Espiner is helping to organise the event, and told the Press: “By sponsoring this event you really will be helping York City Supporters Trust to recognise the fantastic support given to York City over 70-80 plus years by what must surely be the ‘crème de la crème’ of City’s supporter base.
“Your sponsorship will help to ensure that these fabulous supporters enjoy a day to remember as a lasting memento of that day in 1955, surely the proudest moment in the rich history of York City Football Club.”
The Trust said on their website: “We would welcome interest from any local business, or indeed any City fan, who would be interested in sponsoring a table.
“In doing so you would be offered two places, and you would be able to mingle with City fans from that famous day, who by now must be aged a minimum of late 70s, 80s and 90s, and must have some fascinating memories to share.
“We hope that you will be able to help us make this a day to remember for this group of very special fans who have shown such dedication and loyalty to the club over such an extended period of time.
“We are determined to provide them with a day to remember as a thank you for their fantastic lifetime of support.”
To register your interest in sponsorship, or if you attended the semi-final match, supporters are told to contact Terry at [email protected].
