The event, which will take place from July 15 to 20, is an annual inter-university engineering competition.
For York’s team, this is a chance to showcase their hard work in competition, but also to display a race car engineered and built in the city.
The team is competing in the electric vehicle class.
This class includes a judgement on the car itself, its engineering quality, and innovative designs, and will involve a team business presentation to discuss budgets and marketing strategies.
A spokesperson said: “The road to Silverstone has not been without its challenges.
“Despite limited funding compared to some of the more established teams, York’s Formula Student team is a force to be reckoned with, thanks to their passion for motorsports, engineering, and the diversity within the team.”
The team’s members are studying for various different degrees, from English to Computer Science to Engineering.
Their involvement in the competition extends beyond just the car’s engineering, as they are also part of the Formula Student sim racing championship – where they currently sit fifth out of 57 teams with 425 points (as of March 19).
Team principal Tom Comrie said: “Our team is one of the most diverse in the competition, and as one of the newer, lower-funded teams, our close partnerships with local sponsors have been crucial.
“Being part of the team has opened up career opportunities for me that wouldn’t have been available through my course alone.
“I’ve enjoyed every moment with the team.”
Every part of the car is built by the team in the university’s School of PET facilities.
The hands-on approach means that students can gain engineering experience and learn skills such as welding.
The team’s success has been supported by a range of local and big brand sponsors, including Gillies Fabrics, YuFund, and RS Components, with donations from companies like Loctite.
A spokesperson described these partnerships as having been “essential” in helping the team push forward in the face of their financial challenges.
