‘Child safety too important to be playing games over’

THE recent attacks by Elon Musk on Jess Phillips MP, claiming that she is a “rape genocide apologist” is utterly disgraceful.

While I disagree with Ms Phillips on many aspects of politics, she has always been a staunch opponent of abuse towards women and girls.

Musk’s attack, which has been amplified by the far right, has potentially put the safety of Ms Phillips at risk.

Musk is clearly totally unaware of the 2022 inquiry (the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse) which lasted seven years, considered nearly three million pages of documents on 15 cases of grooming and made 20 recommendations.

Sadly, the Conservatives did not implement any of those recommendations during the two years they were in power after the inquiry ended.

The calls from some publicity-seeking politicians for a new national inquiry, which will actually do more harm than good by delaying action, should be disregarded.

What is needed is the rapid implementation of the recommendations made in 2022, which is exactly what the chair of that inquiry, Prof Alexis Jay, said this week.

Any inquiries into specific cases of mass grooming and abuse, such as in Oldham and Telford, are best carried out at a local level, as they are better able to deal with specific local issues.

Child safety is far too important for politicians to be playing games over.

Trump’s words are a threat to the free world

Donald Trump and his declaration of potentially taking over the Panama Canal and Greenland by force if necessary  is a tactic older than war itself.

Unifying a country by creating a threat, internal  or  external, is very similar to the way Adolf Hitler united the German people against the Jewish people and portraying the Soviets as a subhuman species and unifying the masses against an imagined threat.

So it is with Trump who is whipping the population up to create a’ great again’ culture.

The threat of potential actions be it military or monetary is as much a threat to civilisation as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and should be opposed by the rest of the free world.

Christmas market was great

My wife and I visited the Christmas Market on the December 2 and had a very enjoyable experience. We didn’t find it too crowded and were able to visit each stall without being pushed out.

Having visited Lincoln Market a previous year, which was heaving to the point of having to miss some stalls altogether, we thought the York Market seemed very well organised and spacious.

While I recognise it would have got busier nearer Christmas, we will certainly visit again.
