New Huddersfield Town signing sets out his goals after finally securing deal

The 30-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Terriers

New Huddersfield Town signing Ashley Fletcher is looking to “carry on” the form he showed at previous club Blackpool with his new side.

The striker became Town’s first recruit of the summer on Thursday, with the 30-year-old penning a two-year deal with the Terriers.

Fletcher has joined the club off the back of scoring 32 goals across his past two campaigns with the Seasiders, 21 of which were netted last term.

Discussing his move, Fletcher told HTTV: “It’s great to finally get it done. It’s been brewing probably the last few weeks, so obviously delighted to get here to a fantastic football club, and hopefully have some success.

“I’m delighted to come here and offer my experience, and the first and obviously most important thing is to score goals and create goals and assists, and that’s what I’m here to do.”

Asked what a good season looks like for him next term, the new recruit added: “Just to carry on off the back of last season really, or the last two seasons.

“I’ve had a lot of success in front of goal, a lot of goal contributions, and for me I just want to maintain that, and carry on, and help this team achieve what we all want to do, which is obviously to get promoted to the Championship. That’s the reason why hopefully the club are bringing me in, and I hope that I can help along the way to achieve that.

“I got 21 last year in all competitions, 15 in the league, so for me, if I can even achieve similar numbers to that this year, and adding to already the quality that’s in the dressing room, then that’ll be an unbelievable season for me, and I’m sure we’ll be there or thereabouts if that’s the case.”

Fletcher cited talks with the club as a key factor behind his decision to sign, with the striker saying: “One of the main reasons why I came to the football club was I had an unbelievable meeting with Martin (Drury), with Jon Stead and with Chris (Markham), and there were other opportunities to go elsewhere, but as soon as I spoke with all three of them, their vision for the club was fantastic, and the way that they want to do things, and make this place really high performing, so for me I was really excited.

“I spoke with my representatives, and I said ‘I just want to get it done now’, and thankfully we’ve got there, and for me I just can’t wait to get back into pre-season and get going really.”

The 30-year-old had permanent spells with Manchester United, West Ham United, Middlesbrough and Watford prior to joining Blackpool, as well as loans at Barnsley, Sunderland, New York Red Bulls, Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday.

The striker had the most prolific stint of his career to date with the Tangerines, and on his successful spell with the fellow League One outfit, he added: “I think it’s going into an environment where I felt wanted, which was really important, and I get that sense here.

“A massive thank you to Blackpool, because I went there and they were able to put me in a position where I was able to play my best football, but we couldn’t get to an agreement moving forward, so why I’m here is exactly the same reason. I felt the love from the manager, and the assistant manager and sporting director, and the environment seems to be right for me.

“I look at the fanbase, and they fill the stadiums and stuff, and it’s a massive ground, and the facilities are fantastic here, so just touching on why it’s probably clicked is I’ve just felt wanted, and with that for me is the most important thing, I’m able to produce my best football, so I hope that can continue here.”
