After York’s season came to an end last Tuesday, following a 3-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic in the National League play-off semi-final, manager Adam Hinshelwood had confirmed that plans for the future would immediately begin.
Whilst there is still no confirmation as of yet on City’s retained list, reports have circulated that the football club are close to agreeing a first new signing.
Ollie Banks, a midfielder, was in attendance on Tuesday and is reportedly on York’s transfer shortlist.
The 32-year-old made his senior debut for Rotherham United in 2011 and even scored in his single appearance, before going on to have loan spells with a number of non-league clubs.
After being released by Rotherham, Banks did go on trial with York, but no move ever materialised in 2012.
He instead linked up with Gainsborough Trinity, before going on to have stints with Scarborough Athletic, North Ferriby United, FC United of Manchester and Chesterfield.
In Banks’ first spell with Chesterfield, he would make just shy of 100 appearances across three years and gain promotion from League Two, before moving on to Oldham.
Banks would spend a further two years with the Latics, also having loan spells with Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town, before a permanent switch to Tranmere followed.
After one season at Barrow, Banks returned to Chesterfield in 2022, where he helped guide the club to promotion from the National League.
As a part of the Spireites retained list, Banks had been offered a new deal to remain with the club.
However, the club have now confirmed that Banks has rejected the offer and will leave the club as a free agent.
The Press understands that Banks has agreed to join the Minstermen, following on from comments by co-chairman Matt Uggla, who told BBC York: “I like Ollie Banks a lot, I think that he is a top player.
“I think that he is one who has a bit more nuance than maybe we have got and I think anyone in our league would be very interested in someone like him.
“Banks is someone we have admired for quite some time.”
