Selby Town victorious on homecoming to go top of the league

SELBY Town went to the top of the Macron Northern Counties East League on Saturday with a hard fought home win against Louth Town.

A James Danby goal, a few minutes before half-time, was the difference between the sides.

On a lovely day,  and in front of 226 spectators, Selby got their first home game of the new season underway.

Early exchanges were even between both teams although Louth were lucky when a corner was somehow cleared of the line and then a cross shot from Harry Clapham took a slight deflection for a corner.

At the other end Town goalkeeper Joe Wilton had to be quick off his line a couple of times to clear danger and in fact made one great tackle to thwart a one on one challenge when a Louth player looked certain to score.

The Robins were back in it and Charlie Petch, up for a corner, received the ball 20-yards from goal and his superb shot smacked the crossbar of Alex Laights goal.

A couple of minutes from the break Selby took the lead. Clapham fed a great ball on the left to Ned Dry and his pass was met by Danby whose shot was parried by Laight but entered the net despite a Louth player desperately trying to clear.

The second-half was largely uneventful although both Dan Davison and Ned Dry had good chances that were charged down by Laight.

At the other end Louth were certainly up for an equaliser but their pressure mostly fizzled out in the final third. 

Town saw the final minutes out well and now face two away games starting with South Leeds on Wednesday and then Athersley next Saturday.
