Was Robyn’s First Divorce Because Of Money? (The Controversy About Her Alleged Spending Revealed)

Robyn Brown joined Sister Wives by becoming patriarch Kody Brown’s fourth wife in his polygamous family in 2010, and Robyn’s first marriage may have ended due to financial issues. Robyn’s entry into the family caused some chaos, since the three original wives had been functioning as a family unit for years prior to Robyn’s arrival. Robyn struggled with feeling like the odd wife out, since the others had already found their groove, and Kody’s blatant favoritism towards Robyn contributed to Robyn feeling excluded by the other wives.

Not only did the family have to welcome Robyn and her children, they allegedly also had to absorb Robyn’s debts from her previous marriage. Of course, Robyn ended up being Kody’s sole wife, as former wives Christine Brown, Janelle Brown and Meri Brown all left Kody within a few years. However, questions about Robyn’s first marriage to David Jessop continue to swirl because, while Robyn has characterized her first marriage as very toxic, the real issue that led to their divorce may have been financial.

Gwendlyn Brown accused Kody of “spending very crazy” in the YouTube clip above. Robyn likes to spend too. Sister Wives viewers may remember that when the family was attempting to buy their homes in Las Vegas during season 4, Robyn’s bad credit was an issue that prevented her from getting a home loan.

Robyn attributed the debt to mounting financial challenges she faced after leaving her first marriage. She also said that she took on marital debt to keep the peace in her first marriage. If the marriage was deeply troubled, then Robyn taking on debt to keep the peace makes sense.

According to InTouch, after she left her first husband, he accused her of “fraud,” and she has referenced the fact that she had debts in discussions. She’s talked about racking up credit card charges in the past, but hasn’t addressed the fraud allegation publicly. For example, Robyn talked about her Victoria’s Secret credit card charges via X (formerly Twitter), saying that she needed to shop online for the store’s items because she has “long legs.” In that chat, she also stated that she didn’t know why people were so “hung up” on her credit card debt.

There’s No Proof She Broke A Law

Without A Crystal Ball at YouTube posted some inflammatory content, saying that one of Robyn’s first husband’s nieces claimed that her extended family gave Robyn and David money to cover Robyn’s significant credit card debt, but Robyn used the money for other purchases instead. David was supposedly the one who ended up having to pay back his family members, giving them the amount that Robyn allegedly took. These are allegations – not proof.

David’s niece also insinuated that Robyn would spend so much money on clothing that she had to hide the designs in a shed, and slowly bring them into the house so her then-husband wouldn’t notice. However, breakups get very messy and people don’t always tell the truth. Before saying that Robyn spends too much money, proof is needed. Regardless, she and Kody are characterized as wild spenders who live way beyond their means, perhaps favoring Robyn’s kids over the other wives’ children.

Did The Browns Have To Pay Off Robyn’s Credit Card Debt?

Some Reports Say Yes

While it isn’t known for a fact that the Brown family paid off Robyn’s exorbitant credit card debts that were around $32,000, as per an MSN report, it is known that Robyn was saddled with that debt coming into the Brown family. Starcasm and SoapDirt both reported that the family paid off her debts when she was trying to apply for a home loan during Sister Wives season 4, but without any supporting documents, it is unclear whether this is true. They may have paid off a portion of the debts, or applied for settlements.
