West Malvern stages unique version of Wagner’s Ring Cycle

West Malvern is preparing for a unique staging of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle this August.

Typically, the opera cycle spans four evenings, lasting approximately 15 hours.

However, Judith Sanoon and Tim White have condensed it into a two-and-a-half-hour version to be performed in one sitting at the West Malvern Social Club.

The production will feature a range of fantastical characters, including giants, gods, and dragons, all on the small stage of the social club.

It will include more than 40 participants from the local area.

The inspiration for the production came from Rob Rankin, a well-known supporter of the West Malvern community, who had a vision of staging an opera in the social club.

Following Mr Rankin’s unexpected passing, musical director Judith Sanoon and creative director Tim White decided to bring his dream to life.

Since the start of the year, West Malvern’s musicians, artists, and performers have been preparing for the upcoming shows.

The opera’s plot, which includes themes of love, death, and jam-making, leads to a series of events that result in the downfall of the gods.

The play is suitable for those aged 13 and over.

The performances will take place on Friday, August 15, and Saturday, August 16, at 7.30pm, with a matinee on Sunday, August 17, at 2.30pm.
